Doing good pays off.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In most Hollywood blockbusters that seems to be an irrefutable outcome<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Why then should the real world be any different?\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Are sustainable companies rewarded for trying to be a force for good?\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Is there such a thing as\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2018<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">return on sustainability<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Being profitable is an essential component of any successful sustainable business. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Because<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">sustainability is about being able to remain productive\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and diverse\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">indefinitely and you need healthy profits to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">achieve<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that. Successfully becoming more sustainable should have a positive impact for Planet, People, Profit and Participation. All our clients and <a href=\"https:\/\/wearth.nu\/cases-insights\/\">cases <\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">show that becoming more sustainable really has a positive impact on every element of sustainability, including Profit. Sometimes this is direct and obvious: new revenue streams from additional business models, reducing waste and inefficiencies, or monetizing \u2018left-over\u2019 streams economically. In some cases a company\u2019s action may only have a positive impact on one or two of these \u2018P\u2019s\u2019. For instance; when a company is focusing on labour conditions in its supply chain, there is a positive impact to be expected for People, but no impact on Planet. But a positive RoS can only be achieved if the following is realised:[\/vc_column_text]<div class=\"standard-arrow list-divider bullet-top\"><ul>\n<li>1). A positive impact on Planet, People or Participation may not have a structural negative impact on the others<\/li>\n<li>2). There must always be a positive impact on a Profit level, either immediately or within the foreseeable future<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>[\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text]Making the \u2018right\u2019 trade-offs here can be a challenge. Quantifying these elements, too. Especially if you are trying to predict future success (looking back is always easier). We help you solve this challenge by looking for the right impact drivers. This is particularly helpful in the Profit domain, since most business decisions hinge on this. Some may start from a \u2018Planet\u2019, \u2018People\u2019 or \u2018Participation\u2019 theme (e.g. using wood from sustainably managed forests), but we argue that it always needs to have a Profit impact too (whether it is direct and\/or indirect) for it to be a true successful within a business context.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h3>The financial impact of any company successfully becoming more sustainable, can be reflected in 7 R\u2019s:<\/h3>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/4&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;819&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; image_hovers=&#8221;false&#8221;][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_tta_accordion style=&#8221;flat&#8221; spacing=&#8221;3&#8243; gap=&#8221;3&#8243; c_icon=&#8221;chevron&#8221; active_section=&#8221;&#8221; no_fill=&#8221;true&#8221; collapsible_all=&#8221;true&#8221;][vc_tta_section i_icon_fontawesome=&#8221;fa fa-exclamation-triangle&#8221; add_icon=&#8221;true&#8221; title=&#8221;Lower Risk&#8221; tab_id=&#8221;1605869405277-18cb5f1c-f35e&#8221;][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text]Modern supply chains are global, and are therefore vulnerable to natural disasters and civil unrest. Climate change, water scarcity, and poor labor conditions in much of the world increase the risk. McKinsey reports that the value at stake from sustainability concerns can be as a high as 70% of earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization.<br \/>\nIn the largest study on climate change data and corporations, 8,000 supplier companies (selling to 75 multinationals) reported on their level of climate risk. Of the respondents, 72% said that climate change presents risks that could significantly impact their operations, revenue, or expenditures (<a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2016\/10\/the-comprehensive-business-case-for-sustainability#:~:text=Improving%20risk%20management&amp;text=Climate%20change%2C%20water%20scarcity%2C%20and,taxes%2C%20depreciation%2C%20and%20amortization.\">Harvard Business Review<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Companies that are not operating sustainably face two types of Risks:[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Stranded assets \u2013 some companies have assets on their balance sheet that are heavily dependent on ecosystem services. This means that these assets can become liabilities if ecosystems are further impacted by for instance climate change or loss of biodiversity. In the Netherlands it is estimated that pension funds have \u20ac510 billion euros worth of investments that are currently at risk of becoming stranded assets (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbl.nl\/publicaties\/financiele-sector-en-natuur-een-kruisbestuiving\">in Dutch<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Revenues at risk \u2013 the transition towards more sustainable business is a risk for laggards. As more and more companies are adopting sustainability as a core strategic driver for lasting success, the bar is being raised for their competitors. Not acting in time or accurately can lead to revenue losses.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em><u>Our cases:<\/u><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/how-%C3%B8rsted-successfully-transformed-from-coal-wind-20-casper-ten-kate\/\">How <strong>\u00d8rsted\u2019s<\/strong> transition towards a business that is focused on offshore wind, was partially triggered by the oil price fluctuation.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section i_icon_fontawesome=&#8221;fa fa-thumbs-o-up&#8221; add_icon=&#8221;true&#8221; title=&#8221;Improved Reputation&#8221; tab_id=&#8221;1605869405301-c34b38c4-b057&#8243;][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text]The value of a good reputation is not easy to measure. In a way, a company\u2019s reputation is the intangible asset of brand equity. The value of a reputation is best measured in hard times. For instance, during the 2008 recession, companies with superior environmental performance experienced lower cost of debt by 40-45 basis points. In other words: because these companies operated in a sustainable manner, their financers trusted them more, resulting in a lower cost of debt.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<em><u>Our cases:<\/u><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/how-van-straten-medical-transformed-from-wholesaler-willem-bijleveld\/\"><strong>Van Straten Medical\u2019s <\/strong><\/a>transition towards a circular model made them a contestant in BNR\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/thegreenquest.nl\/green-gallery\/van-straten-medical\/\">Green Quest<\/a> and resulted in public recognition from the Dutch minister for health care as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/vanstratenmedical.com\/nl\/persberichten\/van-straten-medical-tekent-green-deal-voor-duurzame-zorg\/\">a shining example of the circular economy<\/a>\u201d<\/li>\n<li>How <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/how-%C3%B8rsted-successfully-transformed-from-coal-wind-20-casper-ten-kate\/\"><strong>\u00d8rsted\u2019s<\/strong> <\/a>\u00a0share price performed 6 times better than their incumbent competitors\u2019 stocks.<\/li>\n<li>How <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/ace-%26-tate_we-are-not-a-sustainable-company-but-we-are-activity-6729342276679671808-l3oj\"><strong>Ace&amp;Tate<\/strong><\/a> is getting more response on their sustainability communication than on any other topic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section i_icon_fontawesome=&#8221;fa fa-angle-double-down&#8221; add_icon=&#8221;true&#8221; title=&#8221;More Resilience&#8221; tab_id=&#8221;1605869433249-4a72ad33-09b1&#8243;][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text]Resilience is a characteristic of healthy companies (and ecosystems, by the way). Sustainable companies have the ability to survive system shocks such as climate events better than \u2018normal\u2019 companies. But also financial crises appear to have a milder impact on sustainable companies. This is primarily caused by better value chain and stakeholder management.<\/p>\n<p>During the 2008 recession, companies committed to sustainability practices achieved \u201cabove average\u201d performance in the financial markets, translating into an average of $650 million in<\/p>\n<p>incremental market capitalization per company. Additionally, companies with superior environmental performance experienced lower cost of debt by 40-45 basis points.<\/p>\n<p>More recently, during the first months of the corona crisis, the top quartile most sustainable companies were hit less violently than the bottom quartile (least sustainable companies). In the period February 17<sup>th<\/sup> 2020 to 23<sup>rd<\/sup> March of the same year, the most sustainable companies lost 29% in share value. The least sustainable companies lost 38% in share value. And when the markets started to bounce back (period 23<sup>rd<\/sup> March till April 17<sup>th<\/sup>) the most sustainable companies grew their share value with 19% versus the 17% of the least sustainable companies.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<em><u>Our cases:<\/u><\/em><\/p>\n<p>How <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/spicing-up-sustainability-verstegen-wearth-pioneers-casper-ten-kate\/\">Verstegen<\/a> managed to mitigate supply chain issues during the Corona crisis, by building partnerships throughout the chain (and found win-win solutions for their production challenges)[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section i_icon_fontawesome=&#8221;fa fa-signal&#8221; add_icon=&#8221;true&#8221; title=&#8221;Increased Revenues&#8221; tab_id=&#8221;1605869455707-b3e9ed57-6d8f&#8221;][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text]A more sustainable business model can help boost a company\u2019s financial performance. Whether the revenues come from adapting to changing customer demands in existing markets, entering new growth markets, or by adopting new (circular \/ regenerative) business models\u2013 sustainability pays off. Companies can also charge higher price premiums based on positive corporate responsibility performance. These premiums can structurally reach 20%, depending on the sector.<\/p>\n<p>A focus on sustainability can also unlock opportunities for process and logistics savings. WalMart, for example, aimed to double fleet efficiency between 2005 and 2015 through better routing, truck loading, driver training, and advanced technologies. By the end of 2014, they had improved fuel efficiency approximately 87% compared to the 2005 baseline. In that year, these improvements resulted in 15,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions avoided and savings of nearly $11 million.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<em><u>Our cases: <\/u><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/how-%C3%B8rsted-successfully-transformed-from-coal-wind-20-casper-ten-kate\/\">\u00d8rsted<\/a> <\/strong><span class=\"TextRun BCX9 SCXW180762550\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX9 SCXW180762550\">Accelerated its market capitalization,<\/span><\/span>with stable EBIT, by 250%<\/li>\n<li>How the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/pure-goat-company_opvolgmelk-biologisch-geitenmelk-activity-6672122938663190528-9CSM\/\"><strong> Pure Goat Company<\/strong> <\/a>managed to create a new product category by using only sustainable ingredients for their infant formula<\/li>\n<li>How Van Straten Medical is growing their business by re-inventing themselves to offer a circular solution model<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section i_icon_fontawesome=&#8221;fa fa-recycle&#8221; add_icon=&#8221;true&#8221; title=&#8221;Augmented Resource efficiency&#8221; tab_id=&#8221;1605869468193-11666c97-c680&#8243;][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text]These is tremendous impact to be made on the cost side of the business. Significant cost reductions can result from improving operational efficiency through better management of natural resources like water and energy, as well as minimizing waste. One study estimated that companies experience an average internal rate of return of 27% to 80% on their low carbon investments. In 2013, GE had reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 32% and water use by 45% compared to 2004 and 2006 baselines, respectively, resulting in $300 million in savings.<\/p>\n<p>In a fully circular model, waste is not present \u2013 just like in nature. This triggers an incredible resource efficiency that is beneficial to both customer and producer. In a circular model all material is re-used, repaired, or recycled. In that order, as this makes full use of the materials at hand.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<em><u>Our cases:<\/u><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/van-straten-medical_innovation-leadership-transformation-activity-6722056806761291776-5L6p\/\"><strong>Van Straten Medical<\/strong><\/a> managed to cut the costs for their clients with up to 75%, whilst improving their own margin and market share<\/li>\n<li>How <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/wearth-strategy-collective-lono-cote-divoire-willem-bijleveld\/\"><strong>Lono C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire<\/strong><\/a> is using the greatest freely available waste stream as a valuable resource for an entire country (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/wearth-strategy-collective-lono-cote-divoire-willem-bijleveld\/\">link<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section i_icon_fontawesome=&#8221;fa fa-gavel&#8221; add_icon=&#8221;true&#8221; title=&#8221;Readiness for Regulation&#8221; tab_id=&#8221;1605869486445-1a8c762a-cd93&#8243;][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text]Much of the strategic value of sustainability comes from the need to continually talk with and learn from key stakeholders. Through regular dialogue with stakeholders and continual iteration, a company with a sustainability agenda is better positioned to anticipate and react to economic, social, environmental, and regulatory changes as they arise. More importantly: the frontrunners in integrating sustainability into their business models will find increased efficiency in adapting new regulations and avoiding fines and penalties, as they tent to be ahead of the curve. Both in hiring new talents and retaining inhouse talents. Studies show that firms with greater corporate responsibility performance can reduce average turnover over time by 25-50%. It can also reduce annual quit rates by 3-3.5%, saving replacement costs up to 90%-200% of an employee\u2019s annual salary for each retained position.<\/p>\n<p>But more importantly, firms that moved towards a more sustainable business model (sometimes even by \u2018merely\u2019 adopting environmental standards) have seen a 16% increase in productivity over firms that did not adopt sustainability practices.
